They now want president Museveni to channel the funds for their compensation through another office and set up a special desk in state house to oversee the exercise.
More than 200 NRA war veterans in Luweero district have petitioned President Yoweri Museveni over unfair compensation. The affected veterans are residents of Kakute, Ndejje-Kabuye, Sambwe and Mwerwerwe villages in Sambwe parish in Nyimbwa Sub County in Luweero district. The Ex-servicemen are accusing officials in the Luweero Triangle ministry handling the compensation of lack of transparency. They now want president Museveni to channel the funds for their compensation through another office and set up a special desk in state house to oversee the exercise.
62-year-old Bruhan Nabugere, the lead petitioner explains that their colleagues who received compensation through the State house finance controller are satisfied unlike those who received their money through the Luweero Triangle Ministry. Nabugere says that in 2008 Museveni said that government had released 30 billion shillings to compensate them but they were shocked to hear Rose Namayanja, the state minister for Luweero Triangle claiming that they had all been paid, which is not true. He says that they want a clear explanation from government over the matter because it has pushed many veterans into despair yet they played a key role in helping Museveni to capture power.
According to Nabugere in 2011 he only received 700,000 shillings out of the 53 million shillings he was meant to receive. Nabugere says that he was shocked to learn that all his colleagues had received their full compensation. 80-year-old Hussein Kata, an ex-combatant and resident of Kakute village says that, he felt betrayed when he had claims by the minister that all veterans had received their full compensation. He claims that he demands 50 million shillings in compensation because he lost his house, 8 family members and 20 heads of cattle in the war.
Kata, who has not received even a single coin, wants his money disbursed to him through state house. 52-year-old Kamuyaati Kibuuka, the widow to the late Yunus Kibuuka says that her husband was the secretary to the committee that was coordinating the rebel attacks on government positions. She says that the NRA soldiers ate their 50 heads of cattle, but they have not received any compensation from government. Rose Namayanja, the state minister for Luweero Triangle has not yet commented on the allegations by the veterans as she could not pick calls from our reporter.
