A 37-year-old ex-convict has been killed by an angry mob in Kabale district after he attempted to stab his family members in a fight for property.

Odomaro Mucunguzi, a resident of Nyarungwe village in Kaharo parish, died on Sunday, two weeks after his release from Ndorwa Government Prison, where he served a five year jail term for murder. Mucunguzi had been convicted for the murder of an area resident only identified as Karama, with whom they had a land dispute in 2012.

But Mucunguzi used a Machete to stab his elder brother Kakarasio Kabarekye early this week, before going into hiding.  He resurfaced on Sunday at around 08:00 a.m. and attempted to stab his father.

According to the Nyarungwe village Chairman, Richard Kapere, family members sounded an alarm calling for help, but Mucunguzi overpowered them and took off as soon as locals descended on him. His luck ran out when he fell off a cliff at Kabaraga hills and rolled into a valley, hitting his head. He died instantly.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region says that the body of the deceased has been taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem. According to Maate, Mucunguzi accused his family of refusing to surrender the balance of the money from a piece of the land he had sold.
