Excitement as Otuke District Gets Power

There is excitement in Otuke as government moves to connect the district onto the national electricity grid through the Rural Electrification Program. The two-billion-shilling project will extend power from Apala in Alebtong district, through Otuke up to Abim district.

There is excitement in Otuke as government moves to connect the district onto the national electricity grid through the Rural Electrification Program.

The two-billion-shilling project will extend power from Apala in Alebtong district, through Otuke up to Abim district. Both local authorities and residents in Otuke now expect fast development of the newly created district that was curved from Lira almost three years ago.

Otuke Woman Member of Parliament Annette Okwenye says when the district is connected they will be able to attract more commercial institutions like the banks among others. Okwenye says the district shall become more economically vibrant once it gets connected to the power grid. She urged residents to remain calm adding that they will soon be compensated.

Douglas Okullu, a shop dealer and bar operator says he has been eagerly waiting for electricity which President Museveni promised them during his 2011 election campaigns. He says power shall boost his business.

Betty Adong, a hotel operator at Orum Trading Centre, could not hide her happiness after receiving the news of government plans to extend power to the new district. She says once connected, she will never miss extending it to her home which is about 60 metres from the main road within the trading centre.

Tom Amako, Project Engineer at Rural Electrification Agency, said the project will be implemented by China Petroleum and Communication Corporation at the cost of over two billion shillings.

The project which is funded by the Norwegian Government shall start this month and will be implemented within a period of 15 months.

The project shall stretch from Apala Sub County in Alebtong district through Otuke to Kiru trading centre in Abim district.
