Family Man Fined UGX 100,000 for Lack of Pit Latrine

Court presided over by grade two magistrate Alex Luwaga on Thursday heard that late last year, John Turinawe (32) ,a peasant and local resident of Kirasa village,Birembo sub county ,Kibaale, was arrested for failing to adhere to required sanitary standards in the community.

 

It is alleged that Turinawe who heads a family of over seven members was found without a latrine and members were using the bush behind the house to ease themselves.

 

The prosecution told court that Turinawe always dodged area health inspections because he had no a latrine.

 

Finding Turinawe guilty, the magistrate fined him 100,000 shillings and ordered he serve a seven day community service sentence.

 

 The magistrate stressed that Turinawe's behaviour was unacceptable and that he acted deliberately to sabotage community health programs.

 

He also ordered the closure of the convict’s home until a reasonable latrine facility is constructed and examined by health officials in the sub county.

 

However in his defence, Turinawe pleaded guilty and appealed to magistrate to forgive him and not close his house.

 

Turinawe will serve out his sentence by slashing, sweeping, mopping and digging among other activities. He will conduct these activities at the headquarters of Bwanswa, Kakumiro and Birembo sub counties in Kibaale district.
