Mourners Recount Byanyima's Truth and Justice Journey

The story of his life was recounted as mourners from across the political divide, security agencies, cultural leaders, and family gathered at St. Pauls Cathedral Namirembe, to pay tribute to a man, who served the country as an educationist, politician, farmer and businessman, among other roles.

Boniface Byanyima, the former National Chairman of the Democratic Party has been praised for standing for the truth throughout his life journey.

The story of his life was recounted as mourners from across the political divide, security agencies, cultural leaders, and family gathered at St. Paul's Cathedral Namirembe, to pay tribute to a man, who served the country as an educationist, politician, farmer and businessman, among other roles.

The 97-year-old succumbed to a stroke on Tuesday at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. His daughter Winnie Byanyima said her father believed in truth and Justice.

"We have talked about how he talked truth to power; this was so important to him, to talk his truth and in many ways, we his children he has taught us that, every one of us knows how to raise their voice in our house…" Winnie Byanyima said.

Byanyima noted that speaking truth to power came with numerous risks and challenged government to provide the necessary freedom for people to express themselves.

Winnie Byanyima further decried the poor pay for medical personnel and the lack of proper medical care to the people of Uganda as areas where government has fallen short of Justice.

Former Democratic Party (DP) president Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere also challenged politicians and different professionals to pick a leaf from Mzee Byanyima's legacy standing for the truth at all times. Ssemwogerere also noted that the late Byanyima was principled, strong in character, reliable and resolute at all times.

DP President Nobert Mao said that Mzee Byanyima was the most consistent in a world of politics where politicians are ‘consistently inconsistent'.

The requiem service was led by Bishop Wilson Mutebi. Mzee Byanyima's body has been taken to his country home in Ruti, Mbarara for a vigil and an ecumenical service to precede his burial on Sunday at 4:00pm.

Boniface Byanyima is survived by six children. They include; Edith, Winnie, Anthony, Martha, Abraham and Olivia.
