A multi million Shillings fish hatchery in Anai Bung Village in Lira District has been left to waste. The hatchery was built with funding from Food and Agricultural Organization - FAO in 2015.
It was established under the “Promoting sensitive Agricultural Diversification to Fight Malnutrition and Enhance Youth Employment in Eastern Africa” project.
The project was aimed at boosting fish production in Lira district. However, Lira district has failed to utilise the facility to date. URN visited the hatchery this morning and found it surrounded by tall grass.
John Odongo, the area LC I Chairperson told Uganda Radio Network that equipment like the solar power system and microscopes have all been vandalized and stolen despite the presence of a guard at the facility

Anthony Ojuka, the Lira District Natural Resource Secretary blames the vandalism and theft of the equipment on residents surrounding the facility. He says they have lost equipment worth more than Shillings 30 million from the facility.
Ojuka says the district is working on a memorandum of understanding to hire out the facility to a private fishery firm in Serere district for effective management and utilisation.
