Zimonia Muhindo Muke, a fish
farmer in Kasese Municipality is counting losses following the suspected
poisoning of his fish ponds.
According to Muhindo, about
10,000 tilapia fish perished in his two fish ponds in Kibenge village
Nyakabingo III ward in Bulembia Division in Kasese Municipality resulting from
the poisoning by unknown people.
Muhindo told URN that he found
thousands of lifeless fish floating on water when he went for routine
inspection on Wednesday morning.
The fish farmer says that he has
already contacted the District Fisheries Officer to investigate the attack,
which has cost him over Shillings 300m.

Cue out: …tunayenda mbele.”//
Muhindo explained to URN that he started his
fish project in November last year with only 5000 fish and had advanced his
population to over 10,000.
According to him, the fish farmers in the
district are insecure because several fish ponds have been poisoned.
Julus Baluku, the Kasese District Principal
Fisheries Officer, says they have commenced investigations to establish what
could have happened.
A sizeable tilapia in
Kasese costs goes for at least Shillings 5000.
Several people have resorted
to fish farming in Kasese because of the enforcement on illegal fishing
operations by the UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit.
