Fatal Accident in Rakai Claims Two Lives

The deceased have been identified as Christopher Ssentumbwe 16, a resident of Gayaza village in Kasaali town council and Ignatius Kangave Mutaawe, 12, of Buterere village in Rakai town council.

A serious accident has turned fatal claiming the lives of two male juveniles in Rakai district.  

The incident occurred today at around 3:15pm near Lugenda village along Kibaale-Rakai road. The deceased identified as Christopher Ssentumbwe, 16, a resident of Gayaza village in Kasaali town council and Ignatius Kangave Mutaawe, 12, of Buterere village in Rakai town council. 

According to Paul Ssentongo, one of the eyewitnesses, Ssentumbwe and Mutaawe were traveling on a motorcycle when a speeding car knocked them.  

Ssentongo adds that the car sped off to an unknown direction leaving the victims severely wounded and in critical condition.   

Dr. Yasin Kiyemba, the Rakai Medical Superintendent, said they gave first aid to the victims and referred them to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.  Unfortunately, Ssentumbwe died shortly before leaving Rakai and Mutaawe passed on after reaching Masaka hospital.

Christopher’s father Fulugensio Ssentumbwe said he was at home when the sad news reached him.

Ben Nuwamanya, the District Police Commander, explains that they were rushed to Rakai Hospital for urgent attention. He adds that they have identified the Toyota Fielder Registration Number UBE 357U which was involved in the accident.

He says that the driver is still on the run as the police pursue him. He explains that by the time AIP Vicent Kyasiimire and a Police Constable-Dismas Mugarura arrived at the scene, the victims’ motorcycle had been removed by unknown people.

However, he attributes the accident to over speeding and reckless driving adding that investigations are continuing. The two bodies have been handed over to their families for burial.
