A man in Kalungu district is nursing burns he sustained in an attempted suicide.

Hassan Munkunyu, a resident of Mukoko village in Bukulula Sub County in Kalungu district is said to have set himself ablaze after suspecting his wife of being involved in an extra marital affair with his neighbor.

According to eyewitness, Mukunyu locked his family of six people in the house on Wednesday night and torched it.

Munkunyu’s wife, Jenifer Natukunda, says her husband returned home in unusual mood only to realize that he was carrying kerosene, which he used to torch the house.

She says despite the timely community response to rescue the family from the burning house, Mukunyu remained adamant and locked himself in the bedroom.

It took police intervention to force him out of the house. Charles Okello, the Kalungu District Police Commander, says Munkunyu was rescued and taken to Bukulula Health Center IV for treatment.

He says despite their timely response to the community alarm, Mukunyu wrestled the officers to frustrate their attempts to rescue him from the inferno.

He says they have commenced investigations into the incident and have recorded statements from the survivors

Charles Muyanja, the Bukulula Sub county LC III Chairperson who was part of the rescue team, says Munkunyu couldn’t have acted under emotional distress.

He asked government to consider reopening houses of worship such that community members can access spiritual and moral support to prevent similar incidents.
