FGM Surgeons Jailed In Moroto

Two women responsible for the mutilation of seven girls in Moroto district were on Wednesday found guilty of procuring female genital mutilation by the Chief Magistrate's court in Moroto and sentenced to jail terms ranging from three to ten and half years in prison.

 

A 45 year old Namuton Namon (A1) was charged with female genital mutilation contrary to section (2) of the FGM act 2010. Nakong Nakuwam-28 (A2) was also charged under section (7) that outlaws participation in the FGM act. Both are residents of Lonyilik village, Tapac Sub County in Moroto district.

 

Court heard that on the July 8, 2014, at around 3.00pm Nakong Nakuwam met five girls at a borehole and guided them to a surgeon based at Maya kraal owned by one Louise Apanailon. The girls were cut after they presented some porridge and local brew to the surgeon for rituals as acceptance. Then on July 10, 2014 two more girls were also mutilated. The police acting on a tip rushed to the scene and recovered two packets of used razor blades and three stones that gave support to the victims during mutilation.

 

The duo pleaded guilty on their own plea, before court.

 

Peter Amalo, the prosecutor said the act on conviction it’s liable for period exceeding five years. He explains that FGM is inhuman, cruel and degrading the dignity of the woman.

His worship Moses Katorogo Mutazindwa ruled that since (A2) Nakuwam and (A1) Namon did not waste court’s time they serve terms ranging from three to ten and half years respectively. He notes that this would act as a deterrent to others who wish to conduct FGM.

The pair was given 14 days each to appeal to the case.

 

Meanwhile, 11 others, parents to the survivors have been remanded at Moroto prison till July 22, 2014.They were charged under section 6 of the FGM act, “aiding, or abetting or inducing or coercing their daughters into the FGM act.

 

FGM, outlawed by government in 2010, is the cultural practice of totally or partially removing the external genitalia of women and girls. The act still thrives in Sebei and the alpine areas of Karamoja sub region.
