Fire has gutted a boys’ dormitory at Juma Alhamil Education Centre
in Buwenge town council, Jinja district.

housing over 150 boys of Primary five and six. Several suitcases, books and mattresses were also destroyed.
The police fire brigade delayed to put out the fire due to lack of an access
route. They spent three hours pleading with the neighbors of the school to provide an access
route.
The residents later agreed to demolish some of their houses to allow fire
brigade access the school.
Saleh Mugulusi, the dormitory warden, says that the torched parts
of the school lack hydroelectric power connection and was relying on
solar. Mugulusi further says that they
suspect a case of arson by unknown people.

Abdullah Mohammed, the school headteacher says that the fire broke out when the
pupils were in class for prep.

Collins Agaba, the Kiira Regional Fire and Rescue services officer says that
investigations are underway to establish the cause of the fire.
He says that a closed meeting has been held between district
education officials and members of the school management committee who agreed
to improvise dormitory space in some of the teachers’ quarters to enable smooth
running of the routine school programs.
