A fire has gutted the mortuary at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital in Kabale district.

The fire which was first seen by hospital staff and patient attendants at around 3 p.m, destroyed the ceiling before extending to the mortuary, where it burnt the body of Julius Byaruhanga, a resident of Rubuguri Town Council in Kisoro district. The 23-year-old died aboard a Kampala bound Jaguar bus early today.

A junior mortuary attendant told our reporter on condition of anonymity that patient attendants saw a huge smoke emitting out of the mortuary, and immediately alerted his immediate supervisor, Gerald Gundu, who mobilized fire extinguishers to put out the fire.

He also alerted the police fire brigade which swiftly responded to put off the fire.

A fire brigade officer at the scene told our reporter that fire could have been caused by an electric shock. He says that by the time they contained the fire, it had started to ravage iron sheets and burning Byaruhanga’s body.

The Hospital’s Senior Principal Nursing Officer whom our reporter only identified as Lamone declined to comment on the matter arguing that she had no idea about what caused the fire.

She referred our reporter to Dr Sophie Namasopo, the Kabale regional referral hospital director for more information. Namasopo also told our reporter that she is not yet aware of the incident since she was not in Kabale.
