Fire has gutted Rukoki health center IV in Rukoki Sub County in Kasese district destroying property worth millions of Shillings. The fire broke out in the health center in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

The affected property includes drugs in the ART clinic, beds and mattresses in the maternity ward.  Patients in the maternity ward were evacuated to health facilities in Kasese town.  Management blames the fire on an electric circuit that started from a freezer in the ART clinic.

Rukoki health center IV is one of the biggest government health facilities in the district, offering free specialized services including obstetric emergencies in Busongora North, Busongora South and Kasese Municipality.

Dr. Joyfred Kayiri, the In-Charge of the health center, estimates that they have lost property worth over Shillings 200million. He says the fire also destroyed other items including freezers, computers and office documents.

Kayiri has called on the government and partners to help the facility re-establish the ART clinic that serves more than 300 clients.
