Five people have been arrested in Soroti district for conducting an illegal eviction of local residents from a disputed piece of land in Aputon village, Arapai Sub County.

John Otim, one of the affected residents says that the contested land belongs to his family, which has occupied it since 1951.
Michael Odongo, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson says the suspects are charged with malicious damage, assault and theft. They include Moses Okedi the University private guard, Jonathan Mutabali, Isa Mugobi, Peter Mutaki and Juma Mutabali.

Soroti Resident District Commissioner Filbert Ochailap, early this week ordered for the arrest of Ruth Achimo, the University secretary, accusing her of masterminding the forceful eviction that resulted in the mass destruction of property. It's alleged that Achimo hired and paid court bailiffs from Mbale to evict sitting tenants without the notice of other top University officials.
Odongo however says police is yet to summon Achimo.
