Lightning has struck dead five pupils at Nyakabingo primary and nursery school in Bushenyi District. Three other pupils were injured critically by the thunderbolt that struck on Wednesday afternoon.
The dead have been identified as Ovaras Mutahunga, Bertin Owomugisha, Anxious Tusimirwe, Vitas Nasasira and Benson Tumuhimbise. The injured are Reagan Nuwagaba, Abel Mpirwe and Queen Masharo.
They are currently admitted at Kampala International Teaching Hospital in Ishaka Town with multiple burns. Anent Namatta, the head teacher Nyakabingo primary and nursery school says the injured pupils were having lunch when they were struck by the thunderbolt.
According to Namatta, the school building has a single lightning arrester. Domiano Turyatunga, the Bushenyi Resident District Commissioner describes the incident as unfortunate. He has promised to lobby parents and leaders to raise funds to purchase additional lightning arresters for every school structure now that rain has intensified.
This is not the first time lightning is killing pupils in a school in Bushenyi district. In July 2014, lightning struck dead eight pupils at Buramba Primary School in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.
As a result, district authorities resolved to compel each school to install lightning arresters. To date, almost three quarters of the schools in the district don't have lightning arresters.
