Police in Kisoro are holding five people for alleged illegal possession of a firearm. According to security officials in the district, the suspects were found with an AK 47 rifle and 14 rounds of ammunition hidden in a Toyota Premio vehicle registration number UAX 670Y.

According to security officials in the district, the suspects were found with an AK 47 rifle and 14 rounds of ammunition hidden in a Toyota Premio vehicle registration number UAX 670Y.
Hajji Shafique Ssekandi, the Kisoro Resident District Commissioner, says that four of the suspects hired Julius Ddunga 31, a special hire driver at Salaama road in Kampala on Monday this week.
They drove to Kisoro town and started lodging at Moon Light Hotel along Mutanda road. Ssekandi says that the suspects had made several sop-overs in Masaka and Mbarara claiming to be transacting business.
However, last night at around 11:00pm, the four suspects disappeared with Ddumba's vehicle an issue that forced him to immediately report to police for intervention.
Ssekandi says that the suspects were intercepted a few kilometres to Bunagana border post heading to the Democratic Republic of Congo. On searching the vehicle, police found a rifle with ammunitions hidden in the boot.
Elly Maate, the Police Spokesperson for Kigezi Region says that all the four suspects and and the driver are being held at Kisoro police station. Maate says that police cannot reveal the identities of the suspects for fear of jeopardising investigations.
This is not the first time a gun is impounded in Kisoro since the start of this year. On 15th January, police on night patrol duty impounded seven guns at Bunagana border as they were being loaded on a Premio vehicle registration number UAS 978B.
A group of people who were loading the six sub machine guns and one PK machine gun ran back to the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kisoro District is currently battling an escalation of gun-related crimes and aggravated robberies. Innocent Mugisha, a prominent businessman in Kisoro town was gunned down by unknown assailants at his home on December 22, 2016. The gunmen also shot and injured another person before fleeing from the scene. The attack on the duo came a month after 35-year-old Jean Ntamuheza, a Rwandan national was killed and his body dumped at a playground in Buhuro village.
On November 20th, 2016, Efrance Uzamukunda, a resident of Murora village was shot by gun wielding men at Kibugu trading centre near Kibugu Church of Uganda, about seven miles to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In August, unknown assailants short and killed Moses Kilongosi, an officer attached to the Field Force Patrol (FFP) while on guard duty at the office of Kisoro Resident State Attorney along Mutanda road in Central division.
