Floods have cut off several roads in Kotido district rendering them impassable. Among the flooded rivers are Dopeth, Longiro, Lomwor, Naokot and Kaikar, all in Rengen Sub County.

The others are Loporokocha in Panyangara Sub Counties and Lodeele in Nakapelimoru Sub County. The floods have cut off residents from accessing services from Kotido Town and other trading centers.

The only access to Kotido town currently is through Abim -Kotido and Moroto Kotido Roads, which is costly for residents.

In Nakapelimoru Sub County, residents have to waddle past the two kilometer flooded section of Nakapelimoru-Panyangara Road through Potongor before they can reach a motorable area and ride an additional 15kms to access the town through Moroto Kotido High Way instead of only 7 km from Nakapelimotu to Kotido.

Paul Adia, the Rengen Sub County LC 3 chairperson where three rivers have cut off free movement, says they have for several years asked Kotido District local government to install box bridges and upgrade the roads with economic value but to date nothing has been done.

Eng. Paul Logole, the Kotido District Engineer, says that he has forwarded a list of three bridges in Rengen Sub County to the Works Ministry for action.

He said the district doesn’t have enough resources to fund construction of bridges.

Eng. Logole adds that because of limited resources, they are working on the roads on rotational basis in per Sub County.

The district has only budgeted about Shillings 146 million to improve roads in Nakapeliru Sub County and in the next financial year, his department will work on roads in Rengen Sub County.
