Transport and business was on Saturday paralysed in Amuru district
after floods submerged the major bridge connecting Lakang Sub County and Gulu
via Amuru and Lamogi Sub Counties.
The heavy rains which started at around 8:00 a.m. and lasted for over six hours
washed away Lakang Bridge which crosses over Lakang road, one of Amuru
district`s major transport and business route connecting to Adjumani and Gulu
districts.
Richard Tekoma, a resident of Lakang says over thirty vehicles and several
motorcycles were stuck on both sides of the road.
Tekoma says the vehicles were loaded with merchandises destined to Otwee
Trading Centre in Otwee Town Council.
William Opiro a businessman from Lakang was going to Pabbo Town Council to
purchase goods was stranded along the road for several hours.
Other victims include Santa Akello who was travelling from Lakang to Bweyale in
Masindi district but was forced to cancel her trip due to the heavy downpour.
Grace Acan also cancelled her trip to Gulu as results of the flooded road and
the submerged bridge.
Lakang Bridge crosses over River Unyama which is the major tributary of the
Nile River. Heavy rains have this year washed away other bridges in Gulu and
parts of Amuru district.
