Echemu was arrested on Thursday in Soroti by the Inspectorate of Government for allegedly defrauding the government more than Six Million Shillings.

The former
District Council Speaker of Amuria, Charles Engoru Echemu has been granted bail
by the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala.
Echemu was arrested on Thursday in Soroti by the Inspectorate of Government for
allegedly defrauding the government more than Six Million Shillings. It is reported
that Echemu, while serving as the council speaker between 2011 and 2016
requested for 6.4 million shillings to travel to Mukono with some councilors
for capacity building, which activity was not done.
He was later asked to refund the money after an audit query on its expenditure.
But Echemu reportedly failed to respond even after several reminders.
Echemu, who
is still the councilor representing Persons with Disabilities- PWDs in Amuria
District Council appeared before the Grade One Magistrate of the Anti-Corruption Court, Sarah Namusobya on Friday. He was granted cash bail of 800,000
Shillings.
Suzan Amero, the Amuria District Woman MP who doubles as Echemu’s sister, and
George Ochom stood as his sureties for bail. Each of the sureties was asked to
execute a non-cash bond of 10 Million Shillings.
Echemu will return to court on March 18, 2022, for further mention of his case.
