The Former Bukonzo County East Member of Parliament, Aprunalis Kithende Kalibogha is in police custody for jumping bond at Bwera Divisional Police

Kithende was picked up by security operatives from Bwera Division Police together with his brother, Peter Kalibogha at Kasese Court Premises on Tuesday.

The former legislator had gone to court for the hearing of a case in, which Fr. David Kiiza, the Kasese Diocesan Secretary sued him for civil trespass on Kithende Hostels in Katadoba Cell, Central Division of Kasese Municipality.

Court had summoned Fr. David Kiiza and Rt. Rev Francis Aquirinus Kibira, the Bishop of Kasese Diocese as state witnesses for cross examination.

The men of God shunned the court summons and didn’t show up and were not represented.

The Kasese Court Grade One Magistrate, Edgar Karakire then set April 12th as the date for hearing the mater.

But as Kithende left court after the adjournment, officers from Bwera Police Division were already stationed at the court premises to arrest him.

Before his arrest, Kithende told URN that he had learnt of a ploy to arrest him orchestrated by rogue elements he called mafias.

He told journalists his arrest is related to a conflict he is embroiled in with some people within Kasese Catholic Diocese over a piece of land at Rwentutu Village.

In October 2018, Kithende was arrested over trespass on the contested land and was released on police bond.

The contested land measures 200 acres and is found in Rwentutu village in Kabirizi Parish in Lake Katwe Sub County.

Police source says the former legislator was arrested for jumping bond. But Kithende says there was no need for his arrest because he is a law-abiding citizen who would have reported to police once summoned.

He added that police had told him they would call him after sanctioning his file, but the call yet to come.  Kithende says conflicts over a series of other properties between his family and the Catholic Church arise from projects and properties he developed with Eleonor Wismer, a Swiss national who is a longtime family friend.

It is said that Wismer who was a long-time development partner with Kithende was disappointed with the quality of work at Kithende Hostels Project that the legislator had superintended over prompting him to donate the properties to the Catholic Church.

He argues that some people in the church were setting him against Wismer to take over the properties that they developed together.

Julius Thembo, the counsel for Kithende from Bagenda and company advocates expressed disappointment with what he called machinations to detain his client.

Thembo said he would do all it takes to represent his client. Attempts to get a comment from the diocese were futile.
