Pierre Mbabazi, a former aspirant for the Kabale Mayoral seat has petitioned the Commission of Inquiry on Land Matters, over the encroachment on a cemetery land in Mwanjari-Southern Division, Kabale Municipality

The cemetery was officially gazetted in 1954 as a native burial ground.  However, in February, Kabale Municipal Council authorities started exhuming bodies from the cemetery and reburied them in a mass grave. The land was levelled and turned into a parking yard for Buses and trucks.

The municipal council also planned to allow other development partners to put up restaurants, hotels and warehouses which could generate revenue for the council.

According to the plan, up to 50 million Shillings has been budgeted for remodelling and upgrading the site for business. The council expects to generate at least 10 million Shillings every month from the site, once the excise is complete.

But, in a petition to Commission, Mbabazi pleaded with the Land Probe led by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire to intervene and stop the council from disturbing the peace of the dead. Mbabazi says that the municipal council failed to allocate for the establishment of another cemetery, where the exhumed bodies could be accorded a decent reburial.

He adds that some leaders in the council have connived with investors to take over the plots.

The Kabale Municipal Town Clerk Innocent Ahimbisibwe told URN that his office is yet to receive any communication from the Commission concerning Mbabazi's petition. He declined to discuss more on the matter.
