Former Journalist Dean Lubowa Saava has been remanded to Kitalya Government's prison on charges of cyberstalking, offensive communication and criminal libel.

Lubowa on Monday appeared before Grade One Magistrate Buganda Road, Marion Mangeni who read to him the charges.

Court heard that Lubowa between March and April 2021, in the Kampala District willfully, maliciously and repeatedly used electronic device to post video recordings on his YouTube and Facebook accounts to harass businessman and flight Captain John K. Kassami before making threats to place him in reasonable fear for his safety.

The accounts are [email protected] and [email protected].

Court also heard that Lubowa and others still at large also at the same time posted on the said accounts that singer Iryn Namubiru was sacrificing people whereas musician Edirisa Musuza popularly known as Eddy Kenzo and Captain Kassami were introducing pornography to children.

This was reportedly done among others to disturb or attempt to disturb the peace, quiet or right of privacy of Kassami with no purpose of legitimate communication.

The prosecution also alleges that Lubowa published a defamatory matter concerning Captain John K Kassami with intent to defame, create hatred, contempt or ridiculed Kassami and also damaged his profession and reputation.

Lubowa however denied the charges against him and asked to be released on bail.

Through his lawyers led by Allan Mulindwa and Richard Lubaale, Lubowa asked to be released on bail on grounds that the charges against him are bailable adding that he is the sole breadwinner at home with a wife and four children.

He also told the court that he has two substantial sureties including his uncle Omurangira Kalema Kimbugwe also a journalist at TV Africa and his cousin sister Christine Nalubega a Make-Up Artist from Makindye a Kampala suburb.

However, the prosecution led by Ivan Kyazze asked the court to be given more time to verify the documents presented by the sureties.

The Magistrate gave the prosecution more time and remanded Lubowa to Kitalya Government prison until May 19th 2021 for the State to make its response to the application.

Trouble for Lubowa started on April 28th 2021 when he was arrested by the detectives attached to the Criminal Investigations Department of Police in Kibuli following a complaint that he had used his social media to accuse Captain Kassami and singer Eddy Kenzo of recruiting young people into homosexuality.

It is also alleged that Musician Iryn Namubiru, accused her of human sacrifice also in a video posted on his social media accounts.

This is not the first time this journalist is landing in trouble.

In 2018, Saava was arrested for alleged fraud, human trafficking and obtaining money by false pretence from unsuspected Ugandans who were seeking jobs abroad.  For this particular crime, he was granted a police bond before being arrested again recently.
