Fort portal municipal leadership has been faulted over the massive encroachment of River Mpanga and its tributaries.

The matter came to the fore during the cleanup of River Mugunu in Fort Portal town under the “Save River Mpanga Now Campaign” on Saturday.

The campaign was launched by King of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV two weeks ago with the aim of saving River Mpanga and its tributaries from degradation and pollution.

During the cleanup of River Mugunu, which snakes through Fort Portal town to River Mpanga, it was observed that there are a number of unregulated businesses along the river banks that discharge harmful waste.

However, Fort Portal municipal leadership hasn’t taken any action.

It was also noted with concern that people have gone ahead to construct permanent houses along the river banks and all the solid waste from the houses ends in the river.

The Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister, Bernard Tungakwo cited an example of washing bays in Kisenyi that have even dug trenches to direct the filth from vehicles into River Mugunu.

He asked the Tooro community to embrace the campaign of saving the rivers.

Kabarole Resident District Commissioner – RDC, Steven Asiimwe wondered how the entire municipality leadership with an enforcement officer would sit back and watch water bodies polluted.

He vowed to set up a special team next week that will be tasked with enforcing the restoration of River Mpanga and its tributaries.

The Fort Portal Municipal Mayor, Rev Willy Kintu Muhanga refuted claims that his regime is solely to blame for the degraded rivers, saying his predecessors are the ones who should be answerable.

He promised to write to all the business operators and owners of buildings along the river banks to remove them.

During the cleanup, residents and police unclogged River Mugunu and slashed along river banks while King Oyo joined the cause and planted a tree along the river.
