Four Gunmen Arrested in Kabale

Four suspected gunmen have been arrested in Kabale district.
The suspects are Private Moses Asiimwe Batangi attached to the UPDF 17th Battalion, Ronald Nkurunzinza a deserter from Security Plus, a private security firm, Amos Musinguzi and Ben Birungi aka Muhima.
Gasper Obingu Onzi, the district Police Commander says that the suspects are believed to have been behind a spate of armed robberies in different parts of Kabale.
Obingu says that Private Asimwe and Nkurunzinza attacked Adrian Kalikumutima, a resident of Rwamahano village in Muko Sub County on July 20 this year, with an SMG Rifle with 90 rounds of ammunition.
He says that the duo robbed of their victim unspecified amount of money, mobile phones and other property. After the incident, the two hid their gun in Ichuya Bumba forest in Rwaburindi, Ikamiro Muko sub County along the Kabale-Kisoro road.
They led the Rapid Response Unit to the area on 9th August 2009, from where the gun was recovered. On 10th August the police searched Nkurunziza's premises and recovered an army raincoat, plain t-shirt and a security Plus Uniform.
Obingu says that when they were arrested Asiimwe, confessed to the police that he stole the firearm used in the robbery, from Pte. Elia Munyaneza, who is attached to Bunyangaro detach in Kisoro.
He says that the other suspects Amos Musinguzi and Ben Birungi aka Muhima who have been operating with one black and KK, who are still at large, were arrested by the Rapid Response Unit operative on August 12, 2009.
The two were picked up after staging a robbery in Lower Rutenga along the Kabale-Kisoro road on 12th August 2009. They had allegedly attacked and robbed Bahati Rubaya a resident of Kabale municipality of mobile phones, and Air Time cards worth 800,000 shillings at 3.30 AM using an imitation gun.
As the RRU operatives driving in a salon Car approached the crime scene, the suspects emerged from a trench with a gun to rob them unknowingly that they were security operatives.
The operatives opened fire on them injuring Musinguzi who escaped with injuries before he was arrested from his mother's home in Rutooma Ward after escaping from Kabale hospital where he was admitted to nurse his injuries.
On interrogation Musinguzi and Birungi Confessed to having staged 3 robberies in Bwindi, 2 in Muko, and 6 in Kabalaga hills in the last 3 months. They said that they have been using 2 hotels in Kabale municipality as they carried out their dubious operations.
The DPC says the group will be charged with aggravated robbery as soon as investigations are complete.
