Four learners of Good Shepherd Primary and Secondary Schools in Luwero district have been injured after Policemen fired teargas inside the schools during road protests.

On Thursday, residents of Mawale trading centre in Makulubita Sub-county staged protests over the dust from ongoing road works along Mawale -Masulita-Kakiri road.  The construction along 23 23-kilometre road is being executed by Abubaker Technical Services.

Isaiah Lutalo the Defense Secretary of Mawale Village said residents resorted to protests after pleading with the contractor to water the road to minimize the dust in vain.

The situation has been made worse by the heavy traffic of Sino trucks transporting sand and stones to the Wakiso district.  Lutalo explained that several residents have suffered from cough and flu, whereas others feed on food contaminated by the dust.

Lutalo, however, noted that the protests turned violent when the residents started to beat up motorists, burn tyres in the road and extort money from them, forcing policemen from Bombo Police station to fire teargas to disperse them.

" Unfortunately, during the process of dispersing protestors, policemen fired teargas canisters in the schools, hence injuring the learners," Lutalo said.

Joseph Kakungulu, the Director of Good Shepherd Primary and Secondary Schools, said Policemen fired teargas canisters inside the school compound, which exploded hence leaving four learners unconscious.

The affected learners were from Primary Seven, six and senior four.

Kakungulu said the learners were rushed to Semuto Health Centre IV, where they sought treatment and were discharged later in the night.

Kakungulu condemned the Police act to firing teargas inside the school compound, yet the learners were not part of the protests.

Sam Twiineamazim, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, said on Friday morning that Police responded to restore order and fired teargas to disperse rowdy youths who were beating motorists as well as blocking the road.

Twiineamazima said that five people were arrested to help in the investigations into the illegal assembly and assaulting motorists.

" This was the third time within a week when the residents were staging the protests and blocking the road. Policemen intervened on Thursday to clear traffic and stop the illegal assembly, " Twiineamazima said in a statement.

However, the Spokesperson did not refer to firing tear gas within the school.
