Joint Security Forces in Karenga district have shot dead four South Sudanese nationals over illegal poaching in the Kidepo National Game Park.

The incident happened on 19th July 2024 at around 7:00 Am in Moru- etom hill, Naseparwae village, Kawanakol Sub County.

The poachers were killed after coming in contact with the Joint Security Forces together with the Uganda Wildlife Authority who were carrying out operations around the Kidepo Valley Park.

The operations were led following the intelligence information that ten South Sudanese nationals were spotted entering the park through the porous borders to hunt wild animals.

Michael Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson said that the forces found when poachers had already killed two buffaloes.

Longole noted the poachers were then confronted by the Joint Security Forces in an exchange of fire. He confirmed that four poachers were killed in a fire exchange with the forces while four guns, five bows, and ten arrows were recovered.

Longole said that the security forces have teamed up with UWA management to monitor the National game park following a series of illegal poaching of wildlife.

The wildlife authority had previously raised a concern about the illegal poaching of wild products at the border between Karenga district and South Sudan forcing wild animals like buffaloes and elephants to migrate towards the districts of Kotido, Kaabong, and Abim for safety.

The elephants have been destroying the community forcing people to flee their homes and others abandoning farm gardens.
