The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has today revealed that they have been saddled with huge debts after hosting the 2012 Cecafa Tusker Senior Challenge Cup.

Rogers Mulindwa, the FUFA spokesman, told Uganda Radio Network that they have debts of close to Shs200 million which they failed to clear during the Cecafa event.

Mulindwa admitted that FUFA is yet to clear bills with four hotels. He laid the blame for the money shortage at the feet of the marketing Committee headed by Rogers Byamukama which failed to get local sponsors to help supplement the cash that came from Cecafa.

Mulindwa explained that the balance of the money given to Cecafa through the sponsors East African Breweries Ltd through their Tusker brand was used to clear expenses like air tickets, allowances, prize money and also hosting the CAF delegation including the President Issa Hayatou. He added that the Federation has entered agreements with a number of service providers so that they can pay the debts slowly.

FUFA Vice President (Youth), Patrick Ogwel also admitted that they are struggling with the huge debt.  He said that the US$150,000 received from the Council for East and Central African Football Association  was far from enough to meet all costs and FUFA is struggling to pay all the debts.

Ogwel revealed that the federation was only able to collect about US$60,000 from gate collectors because there was low turn up. He also attributed the debt to a failure to partner with local sponsors to supplement the FUFA contribution yet they had an operating budget estimate of about Shs930 million

He, however, lauded Uganda for stepping in to successfully host the tournament after the sponsors opted to move it from Kenya.

Uganda hosted the 2012 Cecafa Tusker Senior Challenge Cup from November 24 to December 7 and the Cranes beat Kenya 2-1 in the final. The event attracted Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Malawi, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Rwanda and Burundi.
