The national secondary schools games championship kicked off in Arua on Tuesday with a call to government to improve the state of sports facilities in the country. At least 216 teams drawn from different parts in the country are competing in different games including Netball, Athletics, Volley ball, Handball and Rugby among others.
Speaking at the official opening of the games, the Arua District LC V Chairperson, Genesis Acema reminded government to fulfill its pledge to construct the Dorcus Inzikuru stadium.

Inzikuru won the inaugural world title in women's 3000 m steeplechase, as well as the first Commonwealth title in the event. As a result, president, Yoweri Museveni pledged to construct a modern stadium in her honor to promote sports in Arua.
Speaking at the same event, Patrick Okanyi, the President Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association appealed for more funding from government to improve sports facilities in the country.
He disclosed that unscrupulous people are taking off land for sports facilities because of the story state they are in.

The State Minister for northern Uganda, Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny promised to forward the issues raised by the officials to the Education and Sports Ministry. She warned youth to desist from alcohol consumption and undesirable behavior, which may ruin their talents.

In his speech, Sam Odongo, the Commissioner Physical Education in the Education and Sports Ministry, said the ministry is ready to take the winning team to Rwanda for the next competitions.

The She Cranes played a netball game with a select team from Secondary Schools select at Barifa stadium as part of the opening ceremony. Mvara Secondary school is the main host of the game.
The school head teacher, George Andama, says the game will help the school to become a sports center in the region. The winners in the national championship games will represent Uganda in Rwanda in the East African games and thereafter in the African games.
The team will also travel to China for the international championships.
