We Defected under Duress - Go Forward Team

Five members of the Go-Forward security team, attached to presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi have said they were under duress to declare that they had defected to the to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.

The five are Shadia Nakiwala, Meddie Matovu, Nyanzi Charles, Kabonge Gonzaga and Kakembo Ronald. They say that they were duped by their former colleagues to join a meeting in Bugolobi, a Kampala suburb, whose agenda was not clearly spelt out.

They were later paraded before the media among 68 other people who had reportedly crossed from the Mbabazi camp to join NRM.

Kabonge Gonzaga, one of the alleged defectors recalls that five of them were held hostage by some members of NRM party and threatened that they would lose their lives if they did not read the statements given to them and defect.

Solome Nakaweesi, the TDA (U) Go-Forward Chief of Staff says they have identified two of the men as their former employees by the names of Kato Issa and Mukasa Vincent. She adds that forced defection is one of the steps meant to disrupt Go-Forward activities.
