President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has asked Team Uganda to go and win medals during the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia next month.

The President, while officially flagging off the team to the Games at State House, Entebbe on Thursday afternoon, asked the athletes to be disciplined if they are to perform well and win medals at international events. “You must be fit, have stamina, eat well and also be disciplined to be able to perform,” he said.

“When Stephen Kiprotich won gold at the 2012 London Olympics Uganda was better known,” said Museveni while flagging off the 69-man team that will represent Uganda at the 2018 edition of the Commonwealth Games.

The ceremony was also attended by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni and the State Minister in-charge of Sports, Charles Bakkabulindi, officials from the National Council of Sports (NCS) and Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC).

Dr Patrick Ogwel, the NCS assistant secretary general and also manager for the travelling team thanked the government for the support and promised that the team will work hard to make sure they win more medals than they did in 2014 in Scotland.

Education Minister, Janet Kataaha Museveni, asked the athletes to always pray about everything in life because God comes first and the sport follow. “We are very proud of you and will keep praying that you perform well and raise the Ugandan flag high while in Australia,” she added.

William Blick, President of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) requested that the government waives taxes on sports goods because it hinders development of sports in the country. Blick explained that UOC imported sports attire for the team and had to pay 120 million Shillings in taxes.

Kiprotich, who won Gold in the Olympics Marathon in 2012, will miss the Commonwealth Games as he has opted to run in the Hamburg Marathon instead. At the last Commonwealth Games held in Glasglow, Scotland in 2014 Uganda won one gold medal and four bronze medals. Moses Kipsiro won the 10,000m gold medal but failed to meet the mark for this year's games and was, therefore, dropped from the team.
