The Independent candidate in the Gogonyo County Parliamentary elections Isa Taligoola Bantalib has withdrawn from the race in favor of the National Resistance Movement-NRM party candidate, Derick Orone.

Taligoola announced the withdrawal on Tuesday at a campaign rally Kaukura Primary School that was attended by President Museveni.

According to Taligoola, his decision to step down came after President Museveni met the candidates.  It is not clear when the President met the candidates.

Taligoola said that he will write to the Electoral Commission informing them about the withdrawal from the race.

Addressing his supporters, Orone said that he never wanted any of the candidates to withdraw from the race because he had spent 700 Million Shillings in the court and during the campaigns.

NRM party members led by the Paliisa NRM District Chairperson George Oule Omoding protested the presence of Taligoola at the campaign venue but were calmed by the President's security team.

Two days ago, Papa Paul Sande Emokol, the embattled Emorimori of Teso issued a statement indicating that the National Unity Platform-NUP candidate, Joseph Okoboi Opoloti had withdrawn from the race.

But, the Pallisa District Electoral Commission Returning Officer, Daniel Othieno, says that there are three candidates in the race including Okoboi as far as he is concerned since he hasn't received any formal communication indicating his withdrawal from the elections.

The Gogonyo County seat fell vacant following the court of appeal decision that nullified Orone’s victory over election irregularities.
