Betty Nambooze, the outspoken Democratic Party politician, has accused government of sentencing her to death.
Yesterday Nambooze was prevented from boarding a South African Airways flight to Johannesburg by the police. She was arrested at Entebbe International Airport and taken to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Directorate in Kibuli for questioning on her role in September's pro-Kabaka riots. She was held there for more than two hours.
At the time of her arrest Nambooze was traveling to Johannesburg to receive treatment for an intestinal complication. For the past two months she has been suffering from the undiagnosed condition and has been bed ridden.
This morning Nambooze, her husband Henry Bakireke and her lawyer Elias Lukwago met the Country Manager for South African Airways to discuss her travel. Nambooze was clearly in pain, grimacing consistently as she waited for the meeting to start.
Betty Nambooze said she was in agony. She said government acted inhumanely in blocking her travel and was sentencing her to death by preventing her from receiving treatment.

Speaking after the meeting, Elias Lukwago revealed that the South African Airways Country Manager, Yogi Birigwa, apologized for the incident. She said it was staff of Entebbe Handling Services, not the South African Airways crew that pulled Nambooze after yesterday's flight.
Lukwago said his client has all the relevant travel documents to allow her to travel to Johannesburg. However they have not received confirmation from South African Airways on whether Nambooze will be allowed onto their plane again.

Betty Nambooze still intends to seek treatment abroad despite summons for her to appear in court to answer to charges related to the riots.
