The government of Uganda through the Ministry of Works and Transport has commissioned its first ever upcountry materials testing laboratory in Karamoja sub region.

The Moroto Regional Materials Testing Laboratory, located in Nawanatau Village in Loputuk Sub County will be helping in the testing of construction of materials to ensure suitability for construction purposes and also enhance research through identification and mapping of construction materials sources in the region.

The laboratory sitting on a 13- acre piece of land is expected to serve the construction industry in the Karamoja Sub-Region and other neighbouring districts since existing laboratories are located far away from this region.

Eng. Tonny Mugenyi, the Assistant Commissioner in charge of materials testing and research at the Ministry of Works and Transport says that the laboratory will generate non-tax revenue for the government.

“This is the first up-country laboratory the Ministry has ever constructed. Laboratories are the foundation of science and engineering. As a country, we cannot rely on foreign, private and project laboratories to deliver quality infrastructure as is the case now. As we develop more infrastructure upcountry, we need to construct fully fledged laboratories to test the construction materials for quality control of the construction works,” said Mugenyi during the commissioning.

The Moroto Woman MP, Stella Atyang said that the commissioning of the materials testing laboratory in Moroto is going to save the region from costs of traveling to Mbale for materials testing.

The Minister of State for Works, Musa Ecweru said that the new laboratory will guide and improve the construction industry in Karamoja and the neighboring districts. Ecweru notes that several buildings have not been able to last long because of the poor quality materials that were not subjected to tests before use.

The construction works of Moroto Regional Materials Testing Laboratory commenced on 13 January 2022 and were substantially completed on 7th November 2023. The laboratory is accompanied with the three- units staff residence, water borne toilet blocks, generator house, piped water works and a perimeter wall among other amenities. The project was constructed at a cost of UGX 2.2 billion.
