Gulu Boda-Boda Association Chairman Dismissed over Embezzlement

Thomas Okot Oboma who is currently serving his second term in office as the Chairman of the Association is accused of embezzling 33.6 million shillings, and failing to account for 33 motorcycles donated to the association by Maj. Gen. Otema Awany, Hon. Catherine Lamwaka, and Hon. Alfred Okwonga respectively.

The Chairman of Gulu District Boda-Boda Motorcycle Association has been dismissed for alleged abuse of office and embezzlement. 

Thomas Okot Oboma who is currently serving his second term in office is accused of embezzling 33.6 million shillings, and failing to account for 33 motorcycles donated to the association by Maj. Gen. Otema Awany, Hon. Catherine Lamwaka, and Hon. Alfred Okwonga respectively.

According to the report of the Disciplinary Committee, Oboma collected 20 million shillings from its members and promised to give them motorcycle loans.

The disciplinary committee also discovered that the accused embezzled 5 million shillings given by Maj. Gen. Otema Awany to boost the Boda-Boda women SACCOs. 

Martin Oringa, the chairperson of the disciplinary committee says that Oboma failed to account for the money and the motorcycles. He adds that the Association was also forced to seek guidance from the Gulu RDC before passing their ruling.

Phillip Okongo, the General Secretary of the association said the acts of their chairman is unbecoming.

However, Oboma says that he has not received copy of the suspension letter. 

Gulu District Boda-Boda Motorcycle Association brings together over 750 registered Boda-Boda riders across the six Sub-Counties of Palaro, Patiko, Unyama, Bungatira, Paicho, Awach and the four Divisions of Layibi, Laroo, Bardege and Pece.

Oboma is the eighth Chairperson of the Association after he succeeded Kenneth Ojok Kadogo in 2014.
