Gulu district local government has celebrated the transfer of Brigadier Emmanuel Kanyesigye, the commander of the 4th Division of Uganda People's Defense Forces – UPDF.

Brigadier Kanyesigye who has been at the helm of the 4th Division since 2017 has been posted to Burundi as a military attaché to the Uganda Embassy in Burundi. He handed over office to Col. Bonny Bamweseki, former Deputy Commander of the UPDF First Division on Wednesday afternoon.

Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, the Gulu District LC5 Chairperson says the district organized the party to celebrate the exit of Brigadier Kanyesigye on account of his service to the people of Gulu district.

Ojara says Brigadier Kanyesigye played critical roles in eviction of Balaalo nomadic pastoralists and the fight against environmental destruction in the region after serving the region diligently at the height of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) conflict.

Brigadier Kanyesigye started his tour of duty as Commanding Officer of the 13th Battalion in Koro Sub County at the rank of a Lieutenant before rising to Captain and later Brigadier.

Others achievements according to Ojara he said included the reconstruction of Pece War Memorial Stadium, the Parade ground in Kaunda Grounds as well as successfully fighting the on-going environmental destruction.

According to Mapenduzi, such celebrating is not unique to Brigadier Kanyesigye's departure. He says the district celebrates the services of people who made outstanding contributions to the nation.

Major Santos Okot Lapolo, the Gulu Resident District commissioner said achievements of Brigadier Kanyesigye are worth celebrating. He says that during his leadership, Kanyesigye introduced the true face and identity of the military to the region.

“In addition to guiding the district security committee through difficult times, Brigadier Kanyesigye built a wall of security around us. The wall was made of reliable security information and networking with the ordinary people” he said adding that Brigadier Kanyesigye openly apologized to the people during times that the UPDF was in the wrong.

According to Major Lapolo, Brigadier Kanyesigye ensured that justice was served to the people when an errant UPDF Soldier shot and killed people in a pub in Kabedo Opong last year. The Soldier Corporal Godfrey Odaga, attached to the UPDF guard battalion has since been jailed for 40 years.
