Until the new development, Gulu had a single treatment centre for COVID-19 at the Gulu Regional Referral Hospital which has a capacity
of twelve beds yet serving the eight districts of Acholi Sub Region.
William Onyai, the Gulu District Health Educator told URN on
Thursday morning that the district secured the tents and 2,000 beds from the
World Health Organization (WHO) upon request due to beds shortage and
projected surge in the rate of community infections early next year due to the
political waves in the country.
He added that the new centres will also be used to manage
more COVID-19 patients because the majority of them have failed to manage
themselves from home.
Patients at the centres will be expected to feed themselves
since the district is currently cash strapped.
Gulu has treated more than 800 COVID-19 patients since March
this year and registered at least 30 deaths related to COVID-19.
