Gunmen Shoot Business Couple in Kabale

According to an eye witness, unidentified gunmen shot the couple at around 8:40pm while walking to their home in Mwanjari trading center shortly after closing their Soda Depot in Kabale Central Market.

A Kabale based businessman and his wife were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition last night after being shot by unidentified gunmen. 

The gunshot victims are Francis Aryarugamu and his wife Zamu Kenkoonzi, both residents of Bataka cell, Mwanjari ward Southern Division, Kabale municipality.  According to an eye witness, unidentified gunmen shot the couple at around 8:40pm while walking to their home in Mwanjari trading center shortly after closing their Soda Depot in Kabale Central Market. 

He says the thugs who were riding a motorcycle with unclear number plates also grabbed a black polythene bag from Kenkoonzi containing water melon and took off thinking they had grabbed money.  Ely Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirms the incident, saying the couple was transferred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital from Kabale Regional referral Hospital around midnight. 

He says Aryarugamu was hit in the stomach and the bullet penetrated through the back while Kenkoonzi was shot from the back injuring her right breast.

Our reporter visited Kabale Regional Referral Hospital shortly after the incident and saw some people organizing to transfer the victims to Mbarara Regional Hospital using the police ambulance since none of the doctors responsible for conducting the operation was available and their phones were turned off.

Some of the health workers on duty attended to the gunshot victims briefly and conducted blood transfusion before they were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.  Cases of armed robbery are on the rise in Kigezi sub region. 

On August 3, 2018, three businessmen including Patrick Bukora, a resident of Migyera cell, Julius Saturday from Nsolo B cell from Western division in Busia Municipality and Sauda Nassolo, a businesswoman from Kiyola cell in Nakasongola district were shot by suspected Congolese gunmen.

The thugs who were dressed in Congolese military uniform waylaid their victims who were travelling in a Canter truck registration number UAB 196J that was transporting fish from Kasese district to Ishasha in Kanungu district near the Southern Gate of Kanungu Army Barracks.

The gunmen who emerged from Queen Elizabeth National Park started shooting randomly at their victims and injured three of them in the legs. The gunmen also kidnapped, Robert Mugabe, a resident of Busoni Village in Kituba parish in Nabiswera Sub County in Nakasongola district.  

He was released few days later after his family members and well-wishers paid a ransom of US$ 7500. In March 2018, a female Uganda People's Defense Forces -UPDF soldier identified as Lance Corporal Gladia Amenyo attached to Mpondwe Border Customs in Kasese district was shot by unidentified gunmen in the national park, one kilometer to Mpondwe customs along the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo border. 

Amenyo was shot when two armed thugs ambushed a truck registration number UAZ 782M loaded with sweet plantains alias Gonja and palm oil destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo through the Ishasha border in Kanungu district.  Other people who were traveling in the vehicle fled for dear life during the fracas.
