Tension mounts in Kasese town as Uganda People's Defence Forces-UPDF officers descend on the administrative offices of Rwenzururu Kingdom.

Our reporter in Kasese says that the army has taken siege of the offices located on Rwenzori Street. The main market in Kasese town commonly known as Kasindi has been  closed as more people desert the town which is now covered in gunfire.

All shops long Alexandria Street and Kilembe Road are now deserted. Dozens of armed personnel are seen patrolling the town.

The patrol comes moments after the UPDF surrounded the royal palace of Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu on Saturday morning.

Kingdom officials say they received information that the army is searching for some royal guards at the palace and offices.

The shootings in Kasese come after the army and police carried out an operation in Karangura Sub County, Kabarole district. Eight people were killed.

At the camp of the attackers, the army recovered an identity card belonging to a royal guard identified only as Mbusa. The army also recovered a list of 300 trainees and their telephone contacts during the operation in Karangura.

In a telephone interview, the Rwenzori East Police Spokesperson, Sowed Masud said that the army and police are investigating if the youth who had set up a training camp in Karangura have any links to the royal guards attached to Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu.
