David Okidi, the head teacher of Kokuwam Primary School, a community school Kotido district is in trouble with his Deputy for alleged theft of school food.

World Food Program supplies maize grain to schools in Karamoja in order to ensure that children have midday meals and can concentrate in class. By close of last term, there was a balance of 400 kilograms of grain in the school stores, according to the school records.

However, on Tuesday, the district joint monitoring team found only 100 kilograms of grain in the store. The team led by Kotido District Education Officer, Ajello Lowari also found out that the head teacher and his Deputy who doubles as a store man claimed that the school prepared 140 kilograms of maize grain as lunch for the children on Monday and Tuesday this week.

However, it was found that no meal had been prepared at the school since term term opened due to lack of firewood. This raised queries prompting Kotido Resident District Commissioner- RDC, Peter Logiro to order for the immediate arrest of Okidi and his Deputy, Joseph Lonya.

The duo is in custody at Kotido Central Police Station pending further inquiries. Okidi told our reporter during an interview that the reports in the record book are inaccurate.

The school has an enrollment of 541 pupils.

Kotido District Police Commander, Apollo Kyangungu, says they have opened a wider inquiry on how the school administration has been managing its feeding program.

Every term WFP supplies maize grain to schools depending on enrollment as support to the School feeding program, which parents say they can’t afford.

Last year, residents accused the in charges of the health facilities of stealing the food provided for malnourished children and mothers for their own benefit.
