Three health workers attached to Kyarwabuganda health Centre two in Kakiika division Mbarara district have been interdicted for neglect of duty.

Lois Niwabine the in charge, Annah Kyamazima and Dekens Kugonza, are said to have deserted the health centre for two months without notice.

The three health workers were first arrested on Thursday by the deputy Resident District Commissioner Mbarara Moses Mwebesa during an impromptu visit to the health centre which he found closed at mid-day.

Mwebesa says the arrest of the health workers follows numerous complaints from the residents and local leaders unable to get medical attention at the health centre.

Gloria Kyomugisha, a resident, says she has failed to receive any medical care from the health centre for three months. She says there is never anyone to attend to the sick who turn up.

Kyomugisha claims that the health workers work two days a week and sometimes only one of them reports on duty at 11.00am and close at 1pm or surfaces at 2pm and closes at 3pm.

But Lois Niwabine defended herself and fellow health workers saying they are understaffed and over worked.

According to the Ugandan government\'s health policy, every parish is supposed to have one of these centres led by an enrolled nurse, working with a midwife, two nursing assistants and a health assistant. It runs an out-patient clinic, treating common diseases and offering antenatal care.

But the chief administrative officer Mbarara Felix Esoku told URN that the three civil servants have been interdicted and investigations into their behaviour is underway.

According to Esoku, his office is currently looking into complaints brought against a number of civil servants for abusing public offices and negligence.

These are the first civil servants to be interdicted in Mbarara since the start of 2015 over the abuse of office and neglect of duty.
