Heavy rains affect sugar production at Kinyara

Ramadasan said on Friday that heavy rains have washed away the roads linking the fields to the factory, making it difficult for the sugar cane tractors to maneuver their way to the factory on time.

Heavy rains have greatly affected sugar production at Kinyara sugar factory, the company general manager, Vekatraman Ramadasan has said.

Ramadasan said on Friday that heavy rains have washed away the roads linking the fields to the factory, making it difficult for the sugar cane tractors to maneuver their way to the factory on time.

Equally affected are the cane cutters who can not do their job when it is raining.

Ramadasan told Masindi district political leaders and technical staff who visited the factory on Friday evening that though sugar production at the factory has resumed, the  factory is currently producing around 300 tonnes per day, which is not enough compared to the current demand.

A kilogram of sugar in Masindi cost around 6000 shillings.

Masindi district secretary for finance, Badru Mugab, tasked the general manager to explain why sugar prices are escalating in Masindi yet there is a sugar factory.

He asked the management of Kinyara to subsidize the price of sugar in Masindi.

Ramadasan however said the factory is currently selling a 50 kilogram bag of sugar at 140,000 shillings, and blamed the middlemen for the inflated price of sugar.
