Heavy rains have destroyed a bridge which was commissioned two months ago in Kyenjonjo district. The infrastructure which cost 95 million Shillings, is the crossing link between the Sub Counties of Katooke and Kyarusozi, across the Aswa Swamp.
According to residents, the bridge started collapsing on
Saturday and it was completely down by Tuesday when all its culverts were washed
away by running water.
Businge, a resident in the area, says that this was the only route
major route that connects the two Sub Counties. He says that other routes like Kyenjojo –Rugombe – Kyarusozi are
expensive and time-consuming. By Wednesday, travelers were spending between
15,000 and 20,000 Shillings to reach Katooke.
Robert Mugisha, one of the farmers in the area says that many of them are grounded because they can not access the farms or even transport their agricultural produce to the markets.
Mugisha suspects that the bridge was covered in shoddy work, considering the size of the culverts and the fact that soil, instead of concrete, was used to seal the road.
Kyenjojo District Chairman William Kaija expressed shock at the destruction. Kaija, however, acknowledges that smaller culverts were used because of financial constraints.
//Cue in; “It was under…
Cue out… done to standard.”//
The Kyenjojo Chief Administrative Officer – CAO, Samuel Kaija Ruhweza says that he has already tasked the district engineer to write a report about the incident.
