A heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorms wreaked havoc in Aloi Sub-county, Alebtong district, over the weekend, resulting in the destruction of more than ten houses and a school.

The rain caused significant damage to Oloo Primary School, where four classrooms, three pit latrines, and the office were destroyed. Additionally, it left over ten houses and crop gardens in ruins.

The most affected crops included sesame (simsim), cassava, rice, and orange fruits, raising concerns among residents about potential famine.

David Ocen Opio, the LCI chairperson of Oloo Atidi village, expressed his worries, highlighting that this was the second time that rain had caused such destruction in the area.

He called on the government to urgently repair the school and provide fast-yielding crops to farmers.

Catherine Agnes Tali, the school's headteacher, noted that the tragedy had disrupted the learning environment just ahead of the Primary Leaving Examinations scheduled for the following week.

David Kennedy Odongo, the Alebtong district chairperson, explained that while the district had budgeted for renovations at the same school, it was currently facing resource constraints.
