Speaking after the court session, Justice Moses Kazibwe said court handed the convicts lenient sentences because they pleaded guilty and therefore didnt waste courts time.
High court in Rukungiri has convicted five people on their own plea of guilty for different offenses. The five appeared before Kabale High Court Judge, Moses Kazibwe who is currently handling a special session at Rukungiri High court.
They include Julius Ndyamuhaki, Herbert Akankunda, Wilber Tweheyo and Daniel Ainebyoona. Julius Ndyamuhaki, a resident of Rukungiri District pleaded guilty for the murder of Joel Sigirenda on May 18th 2016 and attempted murder of Emmanuel Twesigye on the same day.
Justice Moses Kazibwe handed Ndyamuhaki eight years for murder and another four years for attempted murder. He also convicted Herbert Akankunda, a resident of Buyanja Sub County to 23 years in jail for murdering his wife Helen Atuhaire on April 05, 2016.
The same court also convicted Richard Nkurunziza, another resident of Kanungu District and Daniel Ainebyoona for raping a 14-year-old girl and 26 year-old woman on May 6th 2013 and September 17th 2014 respectively. Nkurunziza got 12 years while Ainebyoona earned himself 6-years in jail.
Justice Kazibwe also convicted Wilber Tweheyo to 15 years in jail for hacking Fred Bakehayo to death on November 21, 2014. Speaking after the court session, Justice Moses Kazibwe said court handed the convicts lenient sentences because they pleaded guilty and therefore didn't waste court's time.
The court is expected to hear 36 cases under plea bargaining. Under the arrangement, the defendant agrees to plead guilty without trial, and, in return, the prosecutor agrees to dismiss certain charges or make favorable sentence recommendations to the court.
