Hippo Attack Leaves Four Dead

The victims have been identified as Kitebuka Yola who drowned with his unidentified wife and another lady identified as Nayondo Muwonge who drowned with her 1-year old child.

 Four people including a toddler have drowned in Lake Kijanebalora, in Dwaniro Sub County,  Rakai district after their boat was attacked by a Hippopotamus.

Charles Zziwa, the Ddwaniro sub county LC3 Chairperson, says the accident occurred on Monday night. The four were part of the passengers travelling in a wooden boat, when the Hippo pushed their boat  between Rakai district headquarters and Kibona landing site, plunging them into the Lake.

Zziwa explains that the four people- Yola Kitebuka and his wife, and Nayondo Muwonge and her one-year old child were returning from burial in Kibona landing site when the accident happened.

Only two people managed to swim ashore, leaving the four drowning.

Jafaali Mubiru, the Dwaniro Sub- county LC 5 councilor says two bodies have been retrieved, and traditional leaders are performing rituals to retrieve the two remaining bodies.

Alex Twebaze, the Rakai District Police Commander claims that police has not got any information regarding to the incident. He however promises to deploy officers to help in rescue efforts.

Conservationists say Hippos are Africa's most-dangerous large game, and are reputed to kill more people every year than predators like lions or crocodiles.
