Home-based Care COVID-19 Patients Flouting Guidelines

“Most of these people are not got at their respective homes when we go to check on them meaning they are escaping to freely join other members of the public. This is very dangerous and could escalate the spread of the virus into the communities, “said Tumusiime.

Hoima District COVID-19 management teams have raised concern about the high number of COVID-19 patients placed under home-based care move out to freely mix with the public.

Dr. Lawrence Tumusiime, the Hoima District Health Officer-DHO told Uganda Radio Network in an interview on Thursday afternoon that many COVID-19 patients placed under home-based care have failed to adhere to the set guidelines.

Hoima district is currently managing 124 COVID-19 cases. Eight of the cases are being managed at the Hoima Regional Referral Hospital COVID-19 treatment Unit while the remaining 116 cases are under home-based care. According to Dr. Tumusiime, COVID-19 treatment teams visit the patients on a daily basis.

He, however, says that it has come to their attention that many of the patients leave home and freely mix with members of the public, which has the potential of fueling infections.

“Most of these people are not got at their respective homes when we go to check on them meaning they are escaping to freely join other members of the public. This is very dangerous and could escalate the spread of the virus into the communities, “said Tumusiime.

He explains that COVID-19 patients placed under home-based care are expected to self-isolate for 21 days as their condition is monitored by health workers.  Dr. Tumusiime has advised the patients to strictly adhere to the COVID-19 guidelines issued to them and stay home to avoid further spread of the pandemic.

He reveals that the district lost five people last week alone to COVID-19, saying there is a need for members of the public to strictly observe the Standard Operating Procedures-SOPs. Hoima district ran out of COVID-19 Vaccines last week despite the huge number of people yearning for vaccination.
