There was a fist fight during a meeting convened in Masaka district over the weekend to establish an alliance between crime preventers and Youth leaders.

The meeting was convened by the Youth and Children's Affairs State Minister, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi and Micro Finance State Minister; Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo at Zebra Hotel to discuss how youths leaders and crime preventers could form an alliance to fight the escalation of crime in central region.

The meeting drew hundreds of youth leaders and crime preventers from central region. It was endorsed by General Kale Kayihura, the Inspector through Blaise Kamugisha, the National Coordinator of Crime Preventers.

All was well until a group of youths led by David Kabanda, one of the National Youths Council leaders allegedly stormed out of the meeting, saying they cannot mix with crime preventers, they referred to as criminals. Kabanda accused the Minister for mixing youths with crime preventers who are known for fueling insecurity in the country.

A bitter fight broke out between the youths and crime preventers when Nakiwala grabbed a micro phone from Kabanda. The meeting generated into total chaos prompting Police to storm the venue to restore order. Police attempted to apprehend Kabanda, which worsened the situation. Several people sustained injuries in the clashes.

The Youths also accused Nakiwala for allegedly getting money from President Yoweri Museveni under the guise of forming an alliance with crime preventers. Isaac Mugema, a youth councilor from Luweero District Youths accused the minister of pay them little allowances despite the fact that they had traveled from distant areas.

He explained that the Shillings 50,000 each of them received from the Minister as allowance was insufficient to cater for their transport and meals back home. Both Nakiwala and Kasolo pleaded with the angry youths to calm down in vain as they walked out of the meeting.

Isaac Lwanga, the Bukomansimbi Youth Councilor faults Kabanda for the mess. He explains that all was peaceful until Kabanda started blasting Nakiwala for mixing the youth leaders with crime preventers. According to Lwanga, Kabanda told Nakiwala to return to Democratic Party and leave NRM alone. He claims that Kabanda also faulted Museveni for appointing a DP member to work with them as opposed to NRM party leaders before he ordered them to abandon the meeting.

According to Lwanga, Kabanda had a lot of money in his vehicle, which he dished out to the youth leaders. Nakiwala declined to comment on the effect of the chaos on the proposed alliance between youth leaders and the Crime Preventers. Blaise Kamugisha, the National Coordinator of Crime Preventers, says they had gathered several views by the time the meeting disintegrated.

He believes that many youths have turned to crime due to unemployment. Other officials who attended the aborted meeting include George Mutabaazi, the Lwengo LC V Chairman and Latif Zaake, the Southern Region Police
