Police in Lwengo have arrested the man whose 42-year-old wife was attacked, raped and axed to death.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon, a few minutes to 3pm, while Harriet Mbabazi was preparing supper for her children.
Godfrey Kiwanuka, a resident of Kiteredde village in Kyazanga Rural, Lwengo district, and husband to the deceased was arrested as the prime suspect in connection with Mbabazi’s death following preliminary inquiries by police detectives.
Dr. Isaiah Kiiza, who examined Mbabazi’s body, confirmed that her neck was twisted after she was raped and later hit on the head. Kiiza explains that she died as a result of too much blood loss.
Kenneth Kabwigo Gumisilizza, the OC Kyazanga police station, says there is a possibility that Kiwanuka killed his wife. During their search detectives found one of Kiwanuka’s shirts stained with what looked like human blood.
Gideon Tulyareba, the Kiteledde LCI Chairman the Kiwanuka had three wives and Mbabazi was the first wife.
Tulyareba says that contrary to what Kiwanuka claims, the husband and wife were estranged. He says that village authorities had several times been forced to intervene to help the feuding couple resolve their domestic disagreements.
Mbabazi’s 8-year old son (names withheld) gave more damning testimony when he revealed that Kiwanuka has tried to strangle Mbabazi on more than one occasion.
Kiwanuka denies killing his wife. He claims he was at his second wife’s home when information about Mbabazi’s death reached him.
Kiwanuka remains in custody at Kyazanga police station as inquiries continue and will be produced in court if investigations prove him responsible for his wife’s death.
