Ik MP Calls for More Deployment to Beef Up Security

Ik County Member of Parliament Hilary Lokwang has asked the Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF to tighten security along the Uganda-Kenya border.

The calls follow heavy gunfire exchange between security forces and an armed groups near the legislator’s home in Timu Sub County, Kaabong district on Monday evening. The legislator was attending a funeral at his home during the time of the attack.

This is the third time that gunmen believed to be Turkana militia are staging an attack near the home since March this year, according to Lokwang. He has asked the UPDF to increase its presence along the Uganda- Kenya border especially at Kamion and Timu, where there is a limited military presence coupled with a scarce population in the area.

According to Lokwang, Karamoja region remains fragile because of the unpredictable security situation.

Isaac Lonio, a resident of Timu Sub County in Kaabong district told URN that the community is now living in fear since the Monday attack. He said bodaboda riders now stop work by 4 pm due to security concerns.

Peter Mugisa, the UPDF 3rd Division Spokesperson, says they are investigating the matter and take appropriate action. Several local leaders in Karamoja have of recent come under attack by suspected warriors.

In September, armed men raided cattle from the home of Michael Wilson Lote, the Moroto District NRM Chairperson. Witnesses said the warriors raided the kraal at Lote’s residence in Singila in Moroto Municipality. The animals have never been recovered.

In 2019, the Kotido district Chairperson Ambrose Lotukei also survived an ambush by suspected Turkana warriors at the height of raids. Ik community borders Kenya from the eastern part of the country. The area is sparsely populated with heavy thickets and tall trees that have given heaven to criminals.
