Uganda's middle-distance runner Halima Nakaayi says that all her focus is now on the 2024 Paris Olympic Games after winning a silver in the women’s 800m final at the 13th All-Africa Games in Accra, Ghana.

Nakaayi finished second with a time of 1:58:59 behind Ethopia’s Tsige Geniecu Duguma who won gold with a time of 1:57:73; while Kenya’s Vivian Kiprotich Chebet finished third, winning a bronze medal.

This is Nakaayi’s second medal in the 800m race at the continental games after winning a bronze medal back in 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. The other Ugandan in the 800m, Susan Aneno finished in sixth place at 2.04.79.

“I have been feeling good, but I think I lost it in the last meters," said the 2019 world champion. "It's early season and am targeting the Olympics. I believe all will be fine.”

Nakaayi’s silver took Uganda’s medal tally to nine with two golds (badminton and cycling), four silvers (3 in weightlifting) (1 in athletics), and three bronze medals (swimming and weightlifting). Uganda is currently 14 on the overall medal table.

Meanwhile in football, Uganda National Under 20 team, the Hippos entered the medal bracket when they defeated tough opponents DR Congo to storm the final of the tournament. The Hippos fought from two goals down in the first half to recover and beat Congo Brazzaville 4-2 in the first semi-final match played at the Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana on Tuesday evening.
